The beautiful Wisconsin Dells provided the backdrop
for this exciting annual Observed Trials event. Jim Altimus, Trialsmaster.
Out did himself again, as usual, by providing all the Wisconsin Observed
Trials Association (WOTA) club members a spectacular two day event, in
an equally beautiful area.
Hills and rocks were on the Menu for the weekends
competition as
Many riders from several surrounding States,
Vied for the many trophies and prizes that awaited the winners. There were
eight classes with 38 riders showing up, including seven riders in the
Special, Enduro Class.
“TeamBORK” (Balding Overweight Riders Klub), in
conjunction with WOTA, in an effort to introduce Observed Trials to other
Offroad riders.
Offered this class along with several great Prizes
to lure the riders. Including an offroad motorcycle trip for two to Moab
Utah, Thanks to Krahl Construction.
The trip was won, By longtime trials rider, Dave
Montgomery of Pleasant Prairie, WI. who took the overall Enduro class honors.
Followed closely by Wisconsin’s own, Eron Ezerins of West Allis. Who took
his Motocross skills to another level by coming in second overall in this
technical event? Eron claimed an oversized IMS Fuel tank for his finish.
“It was a lot of fun” Eron said, during a post ride interview.
The scoring system used is a little different than most trials events. Jim has introduced his own 1-2-3-4-5 scoring system. You are penalized only for the number of times you actually put your foot down in a section, up to a maximum of five. A score of five is also the result if you fail to cross the finish, or go out of bounds, while in the marked section. Like golf, the lowest score wins
The Baraboo Boy scout Troop 77 accomplished the scoring of the riders. Whose enthusiastic members watched over the sections, marking the rider’s scorecards accordingly. Troop 77 also had a very nice concession stand offering several grilled creations as well as chips, soda and water to the many spectators and riders alike.
National rider, Jessie Wellenstein, Captured First place, overall, in the Championship class. Followed closely by Sherco rider, Brad Villand. Third place honors going to Dave Rohrschneider, also on a sherco.
“The farthest part of the two mile loop is also
the most beautiful,” said Jim, who affectionately calls it, The DARKSIDE.
These Rocky Bluffs towering some 200 feet above the surrounding terrain
offers spectacular views in the late afternoon sun, as the shadows splash
the rocks with various shades of gray and green. While, at the same time,
providing the WOTA riders a Challenge as they attempt to conquer the difficult
sections created there by Jim, and longtime WOTA member Ed Polheber
Saturday evening activities started at 5pm with
a freestyle Trials show for the riders and the many spectators from the
Dells and the surrounding areas, As Jim had covered all bases. He included
an ad in the local paper inviting the many Wisconsin Dells visitors to
witness this fantastic event.
A Fabulous Steak, and sweet corn Dinner awaited
all the riders after the event Thanks to Ed, who not only donated all the
food, but also turned out to be one the best chef’s in the area that night,
serving dozens of steaks, grilled to perfection.
No one went away hungry that night, including
the dogs.
Keep your calendar open for next year’s event,
when you too, can…
RETURN to the DARKSIDE!
